Maine runaway arrested in motel

CONWAY, N.H. (AP) – Police say they found a 17-year-old runaway at a motel with a 34-year-old man.

Leroy Stapleton, of New York City and Conway, was ordered held on $25,000 cash bail after his arrest last week on charges of child endangerment, interference with custody and possession of narcotics.

The runaway, Brittany Smith of Stow, Maine, also was charged with drug possession. She was being held $3,000 bail.

Although teenagers face adult criminal charges at age 17, anyone who harms them can be charged with child endangerment or interference with custody until they turn 18.

Both were being held at the Carroll County jail pending a court hearing next week.
