AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine high school students are doing slightly better in math, writing and science, but the majority of students aren’t performing at grade level.
The Maine Department of Education reports Thursday that nearly 1 percent more juniors achieved proficiency or above in math on the SAT last school year than they did in the 2012 school year.
The biggest jump was in the scores for the Maine Educational Assessment for Science. Nearly 3 percent more juniors achieved proficiency or above last school year compared to the previous year.
About 2 percent more students achieved proficiency in writing, but reading scores declined slightly.
The department says that 38 percent of students who are allowed to graduate aren’t proficient in math and reading.
