Maineiacs’ offense stuck in neutral

The Lewiston Maineiacs’ bus got stuck in the snow Friday night.

On Saturday, it was their offense that couldn’t shift into gear.

Cam Fergus potted two goals and Ondrej Pavelec recorded his first shutout of the season to lead the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles to a 4-0 win over a suddenly anemic Lewiston team.

The loss was the Maineiacs’ third straight on a road trip which saw them score just five goals.

We just can’t buy a goal,” Maineiacs head coach Clem Jodoin said. “We’re there. We’re competing hard. We’re battling hard. I just don’t know how to explain it.”

For his part, though, Pavelec is starting to round into the goaltender Cape Breton thought he would be from the beginning of the season.

“He made some Grade A saves,” Jodoin said of Pavelec. “We had some great scoring chances and he was good.”

Jean-Christophe Gauthier scored just 2:20 into the game as he swooped in on a rebound and banged it past Delmas.

“I would have been upset if we stopped playing, if we were outshot like 40-15 or something,” Jodoin said. “But we weren’t.”

Brad Gallant tipped a Jason Swit shot past Delmas at 12:41 to extend the Eagles’ lead.

Lewiston came back out in the second with a renewed vigor, but Pavelec was again equal to the task, stopping the Maineiacs on several solid chances down low.

Fergus put Cape Breton on top 3-0 with a great individual effort for his first goal at 13:28 of the middle frame. The Eagles’ leading scorer stickhandled through three Lewiston players and got a shot off against Delmas. The young netminder made the first save, but lost track of the rebound, which Fergus put in himself as he curled back to the front from behind the net.

“The thing is, two of their goals were on turnovers,” Jodoin said. “We can’t be giving chances like that. We have to work harder to make sure we don’t make those mistakes anymore. The second half, everything is harder.”

Fergus capped off the scoring with another tally at 18:45 of the third, registering the Eagles’ lone power play goal of the two-game series.

Lewiston returns to home ice Wednesday night against the Saint John Sea Dogs.
