Man, 27, drowns in Connecticut

NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) – A 27-year-old Bridgeport man drowned Sunday outside a designated swimming area at Squantz Pond State Park, state officials said.

The victim’s name was being withheld pending notification of his family.

Police with the state Department of Environmental Protection said the man was one of two people who were swimming outside the designated swimming area. Six lifeguards searched the water for the man and found him at about 1:40 p.m.

Lifeguards performed CPR, and the victim was brought to Danbury Hospital.

DEP officials were investigating the drowning.

The death came after the DEP banned cliff diving at Squantz Pond and Millers Pond state parks earlier this summer in an effort to reduce drownings. The DEP said when announcing the ban that it was hiring extra officers, posting signs and setting up lifesaving rings.
