Man, 34, drowns after kayak flips

DENMARK – A 34-year-old Scarborough man drowned at Hancock Pond on Saturday, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service said Monday.

Justin Butts was kayaking on the pond near his family’s camp when he capsized and drowned about 200 yards from the shore, said Mark Latti, a spokesman for the warden service.

Butts had a history of epilepsy and his father, who tried to rescue him with a neighbor, believes his son had a seizure, Latti said.

“His dad was working on the shore and was keeping an eye on him and one time when he looked out he saw the kayak was upside down,” Latti said. “So he and a neighbor went out in a boat and found him unresponsive. They brought him back to shore and tried to revive him but were unsuccessful,” Latti said.

Butts was wearing a life jacket at the time, Latti said.

The accident occurred at about 1:45 p.m. and Warden Neal Wykes responded.

Butts’ medical condition appeared to be a contributing factor in the accident, Latti said. He was pronounced dead at Bridgton Hospital, Latti said.
