Man killed trying to stop DWI

CENTEREACH, N.Y. (AP) – A man who grabbed onto his girlfriend’s car to try to stop her from driving drunk after a block party was run over and killed, police said.

Louis Wiederer was holding onto an open window on the driver’s side of Jesenia Vega’s car around 9 p.m. Saturday when she drove off and dragged him, Suffolk County police said. Wiederer lost his grip on the car and fell under it.

When the car stopped about three blocks away, police said, Wiederer, 26, was dead.

Wiederer, of Westbury, had argued with Vega at the block party to try to prevent her from driving, witnesses said, and he had warned her, “You can’t drive like that!”

Vega, 27, was arrested at the scene and was charged with driving while intoxicated. She was arraigned Sunday and pleaded not guilty; she was being held in jail.

An aunt, Beatriz Vega, of East Meadow, said that her niece, who lives in Carle Place, was “very sweet, very nice, from a good family.”

and that she had never seen her drinking.
