Man pleads not guilty to sexual assault

PARIS — A 33-year-old man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that he sexually assaulted a woman.

Michael Carl Hatch, of 61 Sunrise Drive in Paris, appeared in the Oxford County Superior Court before Justice Robert Clifford. Hatch denied charges of gross sexual assault, attempted gross sexual assault, unlawful sexual contact, assault and violating conditions of release.

According to a report by officer Raymond Paar of the Paris Police Department, a woman accused Hatch of touching her genitals and forcing her to perform a sex act. The woman also said Hatch grabbed her by the hair and slapped her. The woman’s age is not given in the report.

Hatch is currently serving a one-and-a-half year prison sentence after a conviction on unrelated charges in Cumberland County. At the time of the incident in Paris, Hatch was out on bail on charges of burglary, aggravated criminal mischief, and violating conditions of release from that county. A clerk at the Cumberland County Superior Court said she could not disclose which charges Hatch was convicted of over the phone.

Hatch was also required to register as a sex offender following his conviction on charges of gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact in Waldo County Superior Court in 1998. He was sentenced to serve three years in prison in that case.
