Marshall K. Kirk


BROOKLINE, Mass. – Marshall Kenneth Kirk, 47, of Brookline, Mass., formerly of Mechanic Falls, died Thursday, July 28, at his home.

He was born in Norway, Dec. 8, 1957, the son of Roger Marchant Kirk Sr., and Kathleen Marie Murphy Kirk. He was educated in Mechanic Falls elementary and junior high schools, where he represented Mechanic Falls in both state and national spelling bees in 1972. He was valedictorian of the Class of 1976 at Edward Little High School in Auburn. He graduated from Harvard University, Magna Cum Laude in 1980.

He had been involved with neuropsychiatric research at Harvard University, was a genealogist and lecturer at the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston., and had been a biological research assistant at Harvard Medical School. He co-authored, with Hunter Madsen, the published book “After The Ball.”

He wrote many articles on various genealogical topics and was an authority on medieval genealogy. He did extensive genealogical research into the Kirk family tree – tracing back to the 1500s.

He is survived by two brothers, Roger M. Kirk Jr., and his wife, Linda, of Fremont, N.H., and Douglas A. Kirk and his wife, Brenda, of Leeds; a sister, Kathleen E. Kirk McCracken of Virginia Beach, Va.; an aunt, Geneva A. Kirk of Auburn; nephews, Kevin Kirk and Daniel Kirk of Albany, Ore., and Kyle B. Kirk of Littleton, N.H.; a niece, Katie T. Kirk of Leeds; and a stepniece, Ashley L. Alden of Lewiston.

He was predeceased by his parents; an uncle, Wilfred Thibeault and his wife, Elizabeth; an aunt, Theresa Murphy Nera; and a brother, William Kirk.
