LEWISTON — Gaven Shaker and Skyla Webb in Venise Philbrick’s literacy class at Martel Elementary School recently conducted a fundraiser to help the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Massachusetts.

Students read several books about other children helping others around the world, and Mrs. Philbrick asked her students what they thought they could do to help others.

Shaker came up with the idea to help the Shriners Hospitals for Children because his younger brother goes to the Massachusetts hospital to receive help with his legs.

He said that his family saves tabs from their soda cans. He thought that having a fundraiser collecting tabs would be a good idea. Webb agreed.

On June 20, Michael Higgins, a local Shriner, came to Martel. The students presented him with 45 pounds of tabs that they had collected.

Higgins explained that the Shriner’s and Rainbow Girls work together to gather tabs. Then the tabs are traded for money. This fundraiser provides the hospital with thousands of dollars each year.
