Martinez resumes pitching after 19-day break


PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) – Pedro Martinez resumed pitching to hitters after a 19-day hiatus, throwing 50 pitches Monday in a simulated game against minor leaguers.

Martinez had been off on a planned break since July 3. He had surgery Oct. 5.

to repair a torn rotator cuff, and threw to batters on June 26 for the first time after the operation. The three-time Cy Young Award winner, 9-8 with a 4.48 ERA last year, hopes to return to the Mets next month.
