AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Poet, civil rights activist and author Maya Angelou is paying her first visit to Maine in years.

The University of Maine at Augusta is expecting a capacity crowd of 5,000 to listen to an address by Angelou Monday night at the Augusta Civic Center.

The event will open with several students and Rachel Talbot-Ross of the Portland NAACP reading from selected writings of Angelou. Then Angelou will address the crowd.

Angelou is perhaps best known for “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” the first volume of her autobiography. She last spoke in Maine fifteen years ago in Orono.
