TURNER – The DFD Russell Medical Center, with facilities in Leeds, Turner and Monmouth, has received a $591,790 grant to continue providing health care to Maine’s rural communities.

The grant will enable the facilities to serve those most in need – persons with no insurance or who are under insured, and to provide primary care and obstetrical services, said Laurie Kane, chief executive officer of the center.

The money also will help to serve age groups from pediatrics to geriatrics; to provide mental health, family and substance abuse counseling; to help patients obtain needed prescriptions; and to provide transportation when needed.

The grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services supports Maine’s efforts to extend adequate, affordable and accessible health care throughout the state, according to U. S. Sens. Susan M. Collins and Olympia J. Snowe, who announced the award.
