Meeting set on school budget

POLAND — Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland voters are invited to a public presentation of Regional School Unit 16’s proposed budget at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 3, in the Poland Regional High School auditorium.

The $17.2 million budget, approved last week by school directors, is $1.1 million less than this year’s budget. Property taxes in the three towns will be minimally affected, but staff and programs will be cut.

A total of 24 positions in the school system are eliminated in the 2010-11 budget. Among the programs affected are music, where the number of teaching positions will go from four and a half to three. French will be eliminated at Poland Regional High School.

After the budget presentation and discussion, attendees will vote on whether to forward a proposed budget to a referendum ballot on May 11 at customary polling places in the three towns.

Town clerks and registrars of voters from Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland will be present at 6 p.m. Monday to check people into the meeting.
