Men receive free voice lessons

NORWAY – The Hillsmen Barbershoppers held their first night of free voice lessons recently. Those attending received lessons on proper stance, posture and breathing from Director Pat Fleck.

Barbershop-style singing is a blend of four separate parts – tenor, lead, baritone and bass. The parts meld to create that barbershop ringing chord sound.

Hillsmen members and seminar attendees are learning two songs during the training program. The songs are classics, “My Wild Irish Rose” and “Heart.”

After the initial lesson and some practice, the group joined to give the songs a try. “I’m impressed with the quick study of the new students,” said Fleck.

Four members of the Hillsmen have formed a quartet named Four Today, and they performed “Honey – Little Liz Medley.” The evening was finished with fellowship and refreshments.

The Hillsmen invite all interested men from high school age on up to join them for more singing at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Paris Street. The entrance is behind the church and in the downstairs function room. For more information, call Dr. Tere Porter at 743-0656.
