Merlene J. Hoppe


PORTLAND – Merlene J. Hoppe, 74, of Elmhurst, N.Y., died Saturday, May 20, at Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Hartford, Conn., June 13, 1931, a daughter of Thomas M. and Gladys G. (Brewer) Dyson. She was educated in Hartford and Bridgeport, Conn. schools and held degrees from NYU and the Belleview Hospital School of Nursing. She was also a 1953 graduate of the Providence Bible Institute in Rhode Island.

She was licensed as a registered nurse in both Connecticut and New York, and was married to Ernest G. Hoppe who passed away in 1990. She worked as an R.N. for many years in the New York area until her retirement and had always divided her residency time between New York and Sabattus, where she has family.

She was a member of the North Shore Baptist Church in Bayside, N.Y. and for many years was a member of the Visiting Nurses Service of New York. She enjoyed traveling, having had the opportunity to visit several places around the world and singing as she was a longtime member of the ladies’ choir group, the Sweet Adelines of New York City.

She will be dearly missed by her closest friend of 54 years, Emma Jordan of Elmhurst, N.Y.; two sons, SFC, U.S. Army, Ernest P. Hoppe and his wife, Ajkuna, of Germany and Thomas A. Hoppe of Rocky Mount, Va.; four grandchildren, Jonathan A. Hoppe of Germany, Ana Denae Hoppe of Rocky Mount, Va., Evan Stauffer of North Carolina and Ila Stauffer of Rocky Mount, Va.; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Janet Bernard.
