Merrymeeting Audubon offers camp scholarships


BRUNSWICK – Merrymeeting Audubon Society, a chapter of Maine Audubon, is offering scholarships to local environmental education camps for summer 2007. All are residential. Full to half scholarships are available. Applicants msut submit essays with a completed application form, available in area schools or by calling the numbers listed.

Children now in grades three through five may apply for Tanglewood 4-H Camp in Lincolnville. Tanglewood provides traditional camp activities and environmental education on woods and wildlife. Campers select a six-day session from late June to mid-August. For information, call 729-3343 or 442-8195.

Students who will be age 10 to 14 in August may apply to Maine Conservation Camp in Bryant Pond. Sessions for ages 10 to 13 include Natural Explorer, which focuses on outdoor recreation and forest ecology, or Conservation Camp for students interested in outdoor recreation skills and outdoor ethics.

Students 12 to 14 with previous camp experience may apply for Junior Naturalist, which explores the complex relationships in the natural world, or Primitive Skills, which focuses on advanced wilderness skills. For information, call 729-9650.

For one student and one adult interested in stewardship of natural environment, two thirds scholarships are offered to Maine Audubon’s Hog Island camp in Bremen. Students 10 to 14 may apply for Youth Camp. Adults may apply for Field Ornithology or Natural History of the Maine Coast. For more information, call 729-9650.

Final applications, including essays, must be received by April 1. The scholarships are funded by the Merrymeeting Audubon Chapter and by organizations and individuals who contribute as co-sponsors.
