First lady Michelle Obama weighed in on Maine’s hotly contested 2nd District race Thursday.

Democrat Emily Cain released a video of Obama asking people to vote on Tuesday to put “a champion for Maine families and kids” in Congress.

In the video, Obama spoke directly into camera and said, “We all know how important it is to have leaders in Congress who share our values and that’s why I’m supporting Emily Cain for Congress.”

Cain is locked in a tight rematch against the Republican who defeated her two years ago to claim the open seat, Bruce Poliquin.

Obama said that “for 10 years in the Maine Legislature, Emily worked across the aisle to get things done for people in Maine, from passing tax cuts for middle-class families to boosting funding for public schools, because Emily knows that in the end, it doesn’t matter what party we belong to.

“To Emily, what matters most is making a real difference for the people she serves,” Obama said. “And know that Emily will continue to be a champion for Maine families and kids as your congresswoman.”
