MEXICO — Mountain Valley Middle School will host performance poet Nathan Leland on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 9 and 10. Leland will lead poetry workshops both days with students at the middle school. The event will culminate with a coffeehouse, open mic and a feature performance by Leland at 6 p.m. Nov. 10, at the middle school.
The coffeehouse is free and open to the public and local writers are encouraged to come share their work. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. and readers may sign up at the door. Each reader at the open mic will be allowed three minutes to perform. Snacks and beverages will be sold during the event.
Following the open mic readings, Leland will give a featured performance of several of his original poems, along with some favorites by other poets.
Leland is a self-proclaimed “Maine island boy,” having grown up on Orr’s Island in Harpswell. After graduating from Ithaca College in New York, he obtained an Master of Arts in English with a concentration in poetry and poetics from the University of Maine.
He is a regular reader at the Boston Poetry Slam and open mic, and has been a featured poetry leader, teacher, reader and performer at several poetry events in the Boston area and in New York.
