Mondays fine for Auburn council

AUBURN – Tuesday nights should remain open for city councilors most weeks, they agreed Monday.

Councilors discussed adding Tuesday night workshops to their regular weekly schedule.

“We’ve talked a lot, but what have we actually done?” asked Councilor Bruce Bickford. “It just doesn’t feel like we’ve gotten a lot accomplished. We might get more done if we meet more often.”

Councilors meet at 7 p.m. on the first and third Monday of every month for regular meetings. They reserve 90 minutes before those meetings for workshops. They schedule special workshops and meetings on the other Monday nights.

January’s schedule this year has been odd, with holidays coming on the first and third Mondays. Councilors responded by moving their regular meetings to Tuesday for those meetings.

Those meetings were not broadcast on Great Falls TV. The Lewiston City Council regularly meets on Tuesday nights and Great Falls broadcasts those meetings live.

Councilor Robert Hayes said that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

“Maybe there’s a need to not have every discussion in front of the television cameras,” Hayes said. “Maybe we need Tuesday nights to work through some issues on the table and not have to worry about being on camera.”

But Councilor Eric Samson said regular Monday meetings should suffice. New councilors like Bickford are still learning the ropes.

“Believe me, when you get up to speed you’ll be amazed at how quickly you start getting this accomplished,” Samson said.
