Monmouth man summoned after crash

LEWISTON — Two men escaped serious injury Thursday night when a car and Jeep collided on Route 202 near Merrill Road.

Police said Shane Rines, 19, of Monmouth, was headed into Lewiston when he fell asleep at the wheel and his car drifted over the centerline at about 6:30 p.m.

Rines’ vehicle slammed head-on into a Jeep driven by Carl Laliberte, 51, of Leeds, police said.

Both men were examined for injuries but none was considered life-threatening, police said. The wreck forced the closure of the northbound lane and slowed late-day commuter traffic for about an hour as an investigation began and debris was cleaned up.

Rines was summoned to court on a charge of failure to maintain control of a vehicle. The crash remained under investigation by Lewiston police Officer Mike Maillet.
