MILFORD, Mass. (AP) – Authorities on Sunday located the woman they say is the mother of an infant found dead in a trash truck one day earlier.

The 27-year-old woman, whose name was not released, lives in Milford. Paramedics treated her for undisclosed medical emergency while she was at the Milford police headquarters Sunday, according to a police statement.

Police referred all questions to the Worcester District Attorney’s Office, which did not immediately return a phone message left by The Associated Press Sunday.

A Milford Department of Public Works employee found the baby along with garbage inside the trash truck Saturday.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

Authorities are required to contact the state Department of Social Services if the woman has other children. DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro said the department had not been called by early Sunday evening, though the investigation was ongoing.

Massachusetts’ Baby Safe Haven Law, which allows parents of newborns to drop them off at police stations, firehouses and hospitals without punishment, is set to expire next year.

State Rep. Barry R. Finegold, D-Andover, has filed legislation to keep it on the books permanently.
