LEWISTON — Mr. Paperback, as a chain, is doing well, General Manager Jim McCree said Tuesday, but on its own, the Lewiston store is not. Owners have decided to close Mr. Paperback in the Promenade Mall in July.
“The book industry and publishing in general is going through some seismic changes,” McCree said. “It’s not an easy business to be in.”
The bookstore had been there for 10 years, since it bought the former Bookland. The family-owned chain has a total of 11 stores, recently opening a new store in Presque Isle. The Lewiston location is the only one closing, he said. Stock there will start to be discounted next week.
Lewiston manager Jennifer Jannarone said eight employees work there.
“We’re very, very disappointed. The staff and our loyal customers are very upset by it,” she said. “We’re in a very quiet mall here. It’s a tough location. The economy has not helped.”
