Murphy, Dogs slam Baysox

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – David Murphy’s grand slam was all the Portland Sea Dogs needed to beat the Bowie Baysox 4-2 on Sunday.

After five scoreless innings, the Baysox (12-11) took a 1-0 lead when Jeff Fiorentino doubled to lead off the sixth and scored when Portland third baseman Chad Spann couldn’t handle Tony Alvarez’s sharp grounder.

In the bottom of the inning, the Sea Dogs (13-10) loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman before Murphy lofted Eric DuBose’s 1-1 offering high into the right-field pavilion.

Fiorentino knocked a solo homer into the pavilion in the eighth.

Portland starter Chris Smith (2-2) earned the win, allowing one unearned run on four hits over seven innings; Kevin Frederick notched his first save.
