1939 – 2014
AUBURN — Nancy P. Youland, 75, a lifelong resident of Turner, passed away at the Androscoggin Hospice House on Sunday, Nov. 30, surrounded by her family, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Lewiston on July 20, 1939, a daughter of Arthur Pearl Sr. and Eunice (Houghton) Pearl. Nancy graduated from the Leavitt Institute in Turner with the Class of 1957. She married her high school sweetheart, David, on Aug. 25, 1957, and they raised four children.
In her early years, Nancy was an amazing homemaker and mother. She was always supportive of David’s dream. Together, they purchased The Bradford Camps, a remote sporting camp in northern Maine, where Nancy’s culinary talents brought guests back year after year.
After 25 wonderful years, they went on to retire for the second time, selling the sporting camps in 1996. Fall was Nancy’s favorite time of the year, always looking forward to bird hunting. They would spend hours traveling the dirt roads, looking for wildlife. Nancy had many friendships, some since childhood, that she maintained throughout her life as well as those she and David developed through their mutual interests.
Nancy was proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, being the go-to person, whether for advice or for a certain recipe. Her family would always look forward to her hosting a traditional gathering, serving everyone’s favorite dish.
Nancy enjoyed her grandchildren’s sporting events, as well as watching the Patriots, the Daytona 500 or a Red Sox game. She also enjoyed going to lunch with her friends from Red Hat. She had a love of birds, flowers and nature itself. Although Nancy loved to cook, she also enjoyed knitting, gardening, jigsaw puzzles and stacking her own wood.
Her family was very important to her. Nancy leaves behind two sons, Kurt and wife, Karen, of Turner and Kelvin and wife, Dawn, of Turner; two daughters, Kimberly Chesley and husband, Robert, of Auburn and Karen Chase and her husband, Wayne, of Turner; 11 grandchildren, Gretchen Ward and her husband, Abram, of Bowdoin, David Chesley of Merrimack, N.H., Kyle Youland and his wife, Katreana, of Turner, Kolby Youland of Turner, Briana Youland of Milton, Fla., Brody Youland of Turner, Dylan, Emily and Abigail Chase of Turner, Amanda Paquette and her husband, Ian, of Jacksonville, N.C., and Matthew Nash of Bangor; three great-grandchildren, Abram “AJ” and Bryce Ward of Bowdoin and Grace Paquette of Jacksonville, N.C.; a brother, Irwin Pearl, of Rome; her mother-in-law, Louise Youland, of Laconia, N.H.; a brother-in-law, Frank Youland, of Yuma, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Jones, of Gilford, N.H.
Nancy was predeceased by her husband, David R. Youland, whom died on April 2, 2012; two brothers, Arthur Pearl Jr. and Leslie Pearl; and one sister, Doris Butcher.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Mahesh Pandey and the staff at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, and the staff at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for their care and compassion.
