New budget proposal on the table

JAY – The 2007-2008 school budget is proposed at nearly $9.96 million, a $504,203 decrease from this year and $267,168 less in taxes from property owners.

If state revenue figures are received at the end of January as anticipated, a vote on the budget could be taken Thursday, Feb. 1. If not, a special meeting will be scheduled.

Warrant articles need to be approved by Feb. 12 to fit into the budget timeline for a referendum vote in late April.

The proposed budget reflects keeping the fourth-graders at the elementary school and a two-run bus schedule.

The initial proposal presented by administration reflected $661,000 in reductions from the existing $10.5 million budget.

The new package calls for the elimination of the high school assistant principal/athletic director position, which is $89,206 including benefits, and giving an allowance of $38,532 for athletic director services.

It also calls for closing and selling the central office building that houses the superintendent and his staff and moving it to the high school.

Other staff in the building would be relocated including special education service director and staff, which move to the middle school. An office assistant at the central office would be eliminated for a savings of $28,197.

The proposal also eliminates the food service director position for a savings of $62,597 and calls for restructuring that program.
