FARMINGTON — As construction begins for the new elementary school on Quebec Street in Farmington, a committee is asking the community if it wants the W.G. Mallett School to retain its historic name or a new name.
“We are opening it up to suggestions,” said committee member and local historian Paul Mills.
Also on the committee are Principal Tracy Williams and former school board member Joyce Morton of Farmington.
For the past year and a half, committee members have had a number of opportunities to independently assess public sentiment, which has favored retaining the W.G. Mallett name, Mills said Monday. However, the decision was made to have a public comment period with a May 10 deadline.
“The resounding response has been to keep the name because the new building is not a new school and its character and mission have not changed,” Mills said.
