New Year’s baby arrives

RUMFORD – Ava Marie Gallant goes home on Friday to a newly painted bedroom with yellow walls and Winnie the Pooh decorations.

She was born at 8:33 a.m. Wednesday at Rumford Hospital, becoming the area’s first baby born in the new year, the daughter of David Gallant Jr. and Sarah Daye, Hanover.

Besides decorating a room for the new baby, her dad also prepared the family dog, “Jack,” a terrier, for the baby’s homecoming by bringing Ava’s blankets home for Jack to smell so he can get used to the new addition. Gallant said Jack is a nice dog whom he expects will accept the new baby.

Baby Ava, the couple’s first child, was surrounded by gifts from area merchants as well as by her two grandmothers – Adrianne Gallant of Rumford, who was celebrating her third grandchild, and Linda Beaudoin of Hanover, a first-time grandmother. Grandfathers are Mark Beaudoin, David Gallant Sr. and the late David Daye.

Sarah, age 18, was tired, but she hopes Ava doesn’t grow up too fast. She plans to stay home with the baby. David, 25, is a welder who works for a local company.

Ava was delivered by Dr. Rick Marden assisted by delivery room nurse Michelle Gilbert. Ava weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 19 inches long. She is the first baby to be born at Rumford Hospital on Jan. 3 since 2001.

For the past three years, the area’s first births of the New Year happened on Jan. 1. In 2002, the area had to wait until Jan. 7 for the New Year’s baby.

Ava’s parents attended Telstar Regional High School.
