RUMFORD — Coming through for children in need is the motivation for a major fundraising drive for the Make-A-Wish Foundation by NewPage Corp. paper mill in Rumford.
“We have a penny war competition going on between the different departments,” Janet Paul, spokesperson for the mill said, “with all proceeds going to the charity.”
There is also a silent auction under way to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation, a national charity that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses, Paul said.
“The silent auction comprises 40 items,” she said. Many of them are displayed in the mill’s main office. “We have auction items, including Red Sox tickets, New England Patriot tickets, L.L. Bean gift certificates, Casco Bay Cruises and a sailing cruise aboard a 40-foot sailboat off the Maine Coast.”
The company’s fundraiser is just one of many charitable community outreach benefits the roughly 1,000 mill employees participate in throughout the year.
During last year’s holiday season the mill sponsored food baskets that included a turkey and were delivered to needy families throughout the area, Paul said.
