CORINNA — Fire crews from seven towns battled a barn fire on Thursday afternoon.
The storage barn at Simpson View Farms on the Corinna Center Road was engulfed in flames by the time fire crews arrived, Corinna Fire Chief Leslie Bolstridge said.
“Upon arrival, one whole side was completely engulfed. The building being metal, it held the heat in,” Bolstridge said. “The biggest challenge we had was just getting the water supply here to get the fire under control.”
Fire crews from Dexter, Dover-Foxcroft, Garland, Newport, Sangerville and St. Albans assisted the Corinna Fire Department in battling the blaze. A steady stream of tanker trucks kept the water coming.
No one was injured, Bolstridge said.
“It looks like it started around the wood boiler,” he said. “Upon further investigation, maybe we can determine [exactly what started the fire].”
Farm owner Ron Simpson said he was driving down the road when he saw that his barn was on fire.
“[I] looked over and I saw the smoke billowing in the air,” Simpson said. After pulling into the yard, “we busted one door down to get some stuff out. We lost quite a bit.”
Two fully restored antique tractors were lost to the fire along with a loader tractor and two other tractors that were being restored.
“One was my dad’s [that] he bought brand new in ‘56, but that’s gone,” Simpson said.
He said he was able to save one truck he used every day on the dairy farm.
“I backed out through the door with one truck through the flames, but that was it,” Simpson said. “I knew we had to have the truck.”
He said he has insurance on the barn, but he wasn’t sure how much it would cover.
Bolstridge said the fire was under control before 4 p.m., and crews were getting ready to bring in heavy equipment in order to pull the metal back to douse the rest of the fire. The state fire marshal’s office will likely be called, he said.
