OXFORD — An Oxford teenager died after falling through the ice on a pond Wednesday afternoon.
Joshua Wardwell, 17, was checking beaver traps on Chapman Pond, along the North Town Farm Road near Hebron, at around 2:30 p.m. when he fell through thin ice.
Wardwell's 15-year-old girlfriend called police when he fell through, said Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service. Oxford rescue personnel removed Wardwell from the water and took life-saving measures.
Wardwell was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway where he was pronounced dead.
He was a student at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. In 2009, Wardwell's interest in flying was the subject of a Sun Journal story.
