Dozens protest DHHS cuts in Augusta as Maine Senate deliberates budget

AUGUSTA — Maine lawmakers were greeted with a boisterous protest Tuesday as they headed back to finish work on the state's budget.

Dozens of people opposed to proposed cuts to the state's Department of Health and Human Services lined the corridors to the Maine Senate and House of Representatives chanting, "Protect Maine families" and "Maine can do better" and "No more cuts."

The chanting could be heard as a muffled roar inside the Senate chamber when Senate President Kevin Raye, R-Perry, called the Senate to order.

On the agenda is a budget proposal that aims to solve a more than $80 million shortfall in the DHHS budget.

The proposal includes eligibility changes for MaineCare, a low-income senior citizen prescription drug program and the state's share of funding for Head Start programs.

Maine Can Do Better, a statewide coalition of advocacy groups including Engage Maine, Maine Equal Justice Partners, the Maine Women's Lobby, Maine Center for Economic Policy, Fund for a Healthy Maine, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and the National Association of Social Workers Maine, organized the corridor rally Tuesday.

The budget cuts are "indefensible," said Ben Dudley, executive director of Engage Maine. "This is not the Maine we believe in."

State Rep. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, said the process Tuesday would involve the bill bouncing back and forth between the legislative bodies, beginning with the Senate.

Rotundo said she was heartened to see the large number of protesters.

"People are really starting to understand how irresponsible and dangerous this budget is," she said.

As many as 10 amendments to the bill were expected to be voted on in the Senate. Rotundo anticipated the House would hold its first debate on the measure in the afternoon.

The Senate promptly tabled the measure and, as of 11:30 a.m., was awaiting the printing and distribution of the proposed amendments.

Supporters would have been there to!!

But they had to be at work. What a joke. These people throw that word around like it really means what it used to. WORK, that used to mean earning a living and supporting a family. You can do that in other states but not in Maine.
There are so many people working two or three jobs, and still can just barely pay the rent.
People aren't making any money because Maine employers know they don't have to offer a livable wage. I've lived in this state for thirty years, I've only worked in this state for about six years. during that time I have lost a house. been evicted from apartments, and had just about every utility shut off at one time or another. Fortunately I had the ability to work out of state, and still live in the state. Those are what I called my recovery jobs. I had to get two more college degrees to finally earn close to a livable wage in this state.
Until the pay scale meets the needs of the people. Its going to be business as usual. People going to "work" but not earning anything. For that reason alone, the state will remain broke.

Ignor at your own peril . Ignorance is not bliss in this case . They are - y o u r - 99 % http://occupybangor.org/ and probably vote √
On a larger scale , The US has ≠ 15 million vacant houses and > 1.5 million homeless ( Human Rights Now )
If you don't get it , you certainly don't get it •

Supporters would have been

Supporters would have been there, too, but they have to be at work to earn the money that pays the taxes to fund all of these programs. That leaves those that either earn money supplying these services or those that receive these services directly all the time in the world to "protest". Free rides to the protest on taxpayer paid gas, anyone?

Nice.

So when the Tea party protests, It's American's take back their Government.
When the other side does it, they need to get back to work and get off welfare.

How about this - instead of demonizing the other side, why don't we try and stick to their message.

Support the protesters..

I'm sure more would have been there to protest the cuts, if they didn't have to work so many jobs to make a living in this state..and if the gas prices weren't so high..this is the worst kind of cuts that could be made..especially when they affect the elderly and the very young..Lepage is so out of touch with the people of Maine it isn't funny, but he continues on his quest to make a name for himself..even if that name can't be repeated here on these comments..he should have to walk in the shoes of some of these people..he was lucky when he was taken in by some kind family back in the old days when things weren't so tough...things are not the same anymore, but this guy has no problem letting children go without health care and older people go without food because they need to buy their meds..looks like he gets plenty to eat though..I bet he is against abortion too..let them be born, just don't take care of them when their here..even if they have no other means to be fed..hope he gets what's coming to him..karma is a b*#@h!!!
