Maine-NH bridge undergoing repairs this week

KITTERY — A lift bridge between Maine and New Hampshire is undergoing repairs over the coming month.

The Maine Department of Transportation says the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge connecting Kittery, Maine and Portsmouth, N.H., will be closing nightly for safety repairs starting the night of July 5th.

Maine DOT spokesman Ted Talbot says crews will be installing prefabricated steel barriers because of corroded guardrails along the entire length of the bridge. Repairs will continue through Aug. 1.

The Interstate 95 over the Piscataqua River bridge will remain open while the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge is shut down during the evenings and overnight hours. The bridges are getting heavier-than-normal use during demolition and replacement of the Memorial Bridge, the third bridge between Kittery and Portsmouth.
