Credit unions mark Sept. 11 anniversary with donations

LEWISTON — The United Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and St. Mary's Food Pantry were the recipients of a special 9/11 fundraising effort by Maine's credit unions called "People Remembering & Helping People."

At a recent ceremony in Portland, Maine’s credit unions honored and remembered the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and their families. As part of the event, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger distributed more than $6,000 raised by the special fundraiser to the Emergency Food Relief Fund of the five Red Cross chapters in Maine, as well as to a food pantry near each Red Cross chapter in the state.

As a result, the United Valley Chapter in Lewiston received $911, and St. Mary’s Food Pantry of Lewiston received $311.

Representatives from Maine's five American  Red Cross chapters, including the United Valley Chapter in Lewiston, which serves Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties, and from food pantries representing each region of the state, gather with representatives from the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger at the Sept. 11 Memorial in Portland. The campaign distributed funds to the agencies in honor of the Sept. 11 anniversary.
