SABATTUS — Communities on both sides of the Sabattus-Lewiston town line are pulling together to help a local family who lost everything but the clothes on their backs after fire ripped through their Sabattus mobile home on Saturday.
Sabattus fire Chief Don Therrien said the blaze broke out at a mobile home on 32 Pleasant Hill Road just before noon Saturday. The home was being rented by Casey Bowden, who lived there with his girlfriend, her 6-year-old son and the couple's newborn daughter.
No one was home at the time of the fire. Therrien said the cause of the blaze remained under investigation, and he will meet with the State Fire Marshal's Office on Monday.
Therrien said the fire destroyed the house and killed the family pets, including a beloved pit bull firefighters retrieved from the home at Bowden's request. Firefighters from Sabattus, Lewiston, Wales and Monmouth responded to the blaze, and the American Red Cross stepped in to help the family.
"They lost everything but the clothes on their backs. Literally everything," Therrien said.
Donations for the family are being accepted at the YWCA in Lewiston, according to a post on Bowden's Facebook page, and Therrien said people interested in helping can call the Sabattus town office.
On Saturday, Therrien told WMTW Channel 8 that one firefighter was injured when he fell through the floor and scraped his leg.
