TURNER — Richard Lent, Latin teacher at Leavitt Area High School, was awarded the Patience W. Norman Prize for Teacher Excellence amid an enthusiastic crowd of students and teachers.

Patience Norman was a history teacher with an inquisitive mind who believed her students were capable of academic excellence. The Patience W. Norman Prize for Teacher Excellence has been established at the Maine Community Foundation to recognize full-time teachers in MSAD 52 Greene, Leeds and Turner who emulate her educational philosophy; teachers who stimulated intellectual curiosity, raised aspirations and demanded critical thinking in their classrooms.

Lent has been teaching in MSAD 52 since 1985 and holds a master's degree in the classics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was nominated by students, parents and colleagues acknowledging his unique ability to bring Latin alive in his teaching and instill in his students self-motivated learning.

The presentation of the $5,000 award was made by Catherine Carey and Robert Allen, School Board representatives from Leeds; Eben Shaw, principal of Leavitt Area High School; and Henry Aliberti, superintendent of schools.
