The Lithuanian Heritage Club will meet at noon Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Sam's Restaurant in Rumford. Friends of club members are invited to join and participate in planned activities. Membership dues will be accepted for 2012. The club hosted a picnic in August at Black Mountain Ski Resort of Maine. Traditional ethnic food was served to more than 100 people including visitors from Lewiston, Auburn, Portland, Boston and Vermont. Professor Vareikis of Klaipeda University, Lithuania, and family entertained with folk songs, answering questions and providing translations for the audience. Forty-two members and friends traveled to South Boston Lithuanians Citizens Association on Nov. 5 for a traditional buffet. They later visited Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall. In December, the club's Christmas tree, decorated with traditional handmade straw ornaments, was awarded the third place "Viewer's Choice" award at the Rumford Performing Arts Festival of Trees. Future plans include a fall picnic and possibly attending the Lithuanian International Dance Festival in Boston during the summer. As many as 35 folk dance groups from around the world participate, wearing distinctive folk costumes.
