PARIS — George O. Cummings is being honored as the veteran of the month at Maine Veterans Home. Cummings was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and grew up in Washington, D.C. and Maine.
George Cummings is the Veteran of the Month at the Maine Veterans Home in Paris.
Cummings graduated from high school and then went on to college. He joined the Army in December 1963 and served in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic during the Vietnam War. He worked for the military police in the 82nd airborne division, achieving the rank E4.
Cummings was discharged in December 1966 with several honors, the National Defense service medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary medal, Parachute badge and a bronze star with V device.
After his discharge from the service Cummings got married and had two daughters; he has seven grandchildren.
He worked as a manager of a boat marina after the service.
Cummings enjoys skiing, sailboat racing, playing card games such as hearts and listening to his talking books. He really enjoys sea stories, and wishes he could have sailed around the world. He also enjoys listening to country music, exercising, walking outside and spending time with his wife, Kathy.
Cummings came to the Maine Veterans Home in April 2011 and resides on the C-unit.
