NORWAY — On Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. Julia Harper will teach a home composting workshop, sponsored by Teresia Reiki, which will explain how to reduce carbon footprint by diverting food scraps from household garbage and into a compost pile. The workshop is being held at The Center for Healing Arts and Therapies, 180 Main St. Call 890-2177 to reserve a seat. The suggested donation is $5.
Harper will present a variety of home composting systems appropriate for different living situations and lifestyles. The science behind how food waste becomes nutrient-rich compost will also be explored. She will share a recipe of how to create compost tea for pest control and disease-free plants.
Harper works for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Her position is Dempsey Challenge coordinator. Her responsibilities include managing the event's recycling and composting program, which involves instructing a legion of green team volunteers on how to collect the food waste of more than 4,000 people, served over two days, for farm composting. This past fall Harper attended the Maine Compost School at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension at Highmoor Farm in Monmouth.
