Community Garden to be site of harvest/work party

NORWAY — To celebrate a very successful gardening season, the Alan Day Community Garden plans a party to clean up the gardens and celebrate the harvest on Sunday, Oct. 14, beginning at 9 a.m. After a morning of clean-up and work, participants will share a potluck feast at 1 p.m. to celebrate another year of growing together.

The Alan Day Community Garden will be the site of a party to clean up the gardens and celebrate the harvest on Sunday, Oct. 14, beginning at 9 a.m.

Garden coordinator Rocky Crockett will bring his outdoor stove to heat things up and drinks will be provided. Bring a potluck dish to share, and a bowl, spoon or fork, and cup to avoid paper and plastic. Bring a musical instrument to share in a harvest jam.

During the 2012 growing season, the ADCG welcomed more than 20 local gardeners and groups who planted their own plots. It also hosted a successful series of workshops that covered topics such as composting; an introduction to planting, watering and mulching; mapping; permaculture principals; making an herb garden; seed saving; and a garden-to-table cooking workshop. One more workshop is planned, "Food Forest," on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The garden offers a Gardening Help Hotline and planted a Sharing Garden this year to help local families in need. They planted kiwi berries to begin an envisioned fruit orchard and partnered with Food Corps educator Daniel Rennie to partner with the Rowe School. Plus, the on-site composting toilet is making good progress.

The Alan Day Community Garden website at alandaygarden.wordpress.com offers more information about this community project. You can read the history, subscribe to an online newsletter and under “Archives” view a beautiful documentary about the garden made by Emma Day-Branch of South Paris.
