LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing is offering a free fitness workshop for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. "Personal Fitness: An Introduction to Wellness for Life" will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 15 through Feb. 21 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.
This six-week class begins with an overview of exercising with cancer, both pre- and post-treatment. Topics include precautions, benefits and a recommended exercise "prescription." At the first class participants will also learn about the Wellness for Life exercise program and be able to schedule an appointment with a health fitness specialist to design an individualized exercise routine.
The remaining classes will be group exercise under the guidance of a fitness instructor and feature aerobic, strengthening, balance and flexibility exercise. The pace will be appropriate for individuals who have completed and for those who are going through cancer treatment.
Preregistration is available by calling the Dempsey Center at (207) 795-8250; toll-free 1-877-336-7287 or online at www.dempseycenter.org.
