AUBURN — Temple Shalom Synagogue will sponsor a panel discussion in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, titled “Judaism, Christianity and Islam: Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?!”

The discussion will be on the Sunday of the weekend that ends with the holiday honoring Dr. King, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. It is free and open to the public.

According to Rabbi Hillel Katzir, the spiritual leader of Temple Shalom, “Dr. King believed that people of different faith backgrounds could, should – even must – get along, and work together for the good of all. Unfortunately, every faith tradition has aspects to it that can lead to conflict; but every faith tradition also has aspects to it that can lead to peace and cooperation.”

The panel will consist of one speaker from each of the three Abrahamic faiths, each speaking about his own faith. Katzir will speak about Judaism; Reza Jalali, a Muslim, and program coordinator in the Multicultural Student Affairs office at the University of Southern Maine, will speak about his faith; and Rev. Br. Matthias Tanner, retired United Methodist minister and former pastor of the Universalist Church in Greene, will speak about Christianity.
