DEDHAM — A local man was arrested after a six-hour standoff with police Sunday morning at his Dedham home.
James Garland, 46, of 10 Heber Drive, off Green Lake Road, surrendered to the Maine State Police Tactical Team around 8 a.m., according to a press release issued by Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Maine State Police Troopers, Hancock County sheriff’s deputies, Ellsworth and Holden police officers arrived at the lakeside home around 2 a.m. after a woman at the home said she had been assaulted by Garland, and that he had fired a shot from a handgun, according to the release.
The woman fled the home when police arrived and did not require immediate medical assistance.
The relationship between Garland and the woman was not clear Sunday afternoon, McCausland said.
Garland then barricaded himself inside the house. Officers at the scene requested assistance from the tactical team and state police negotiators who spoke to Garland over the phone and a PA system before he surrendered, according to McCausland.
Garland is charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and domestic violence assault and was taken to the Hancock County Jail on Sunday morning.
Garland remained in custody Sunday afternoon and is being held without bail, a jail official said.
