PORTLAND — Portland Ovations will bring the Swedish folk group Vasen to the University of Southern Maine on Thursday, Feb. 16.

The Swedish folk trio Vasen will perform Thursday, Feb. 16, at the University of Southern Maine in Portalnd. The concert, put on by Portland Ovations, will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Hannaford Hall.
The trio — Olov Johansson, Mikael Marin and Roger Tallroth — will perform with special guests Darol Anger and friends. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Hannaford Hall.
Johansson became the first nyckelharpa world champion in 1990; Marin plays the viola with influences that oscillate between Scheenberg and the Beatles; and Tallroth plays a specially tuned 12-string guitar as well as the Swedish bouzoki and octave mandolin.
Between them, they have been featured with dozens of international groups, including the Kronos Quartet.
According to the Utne Reader magazine, "Vasen treads an enchanted territory between classical, folk and pop."
Ovations Offstage will offer a lecture, "New Perspectives on New-Folk Music," at 6:30 p.m. at Hannaford Hall. June Vail, Emerita professor of dance at Bowdoin College, will present an illustrated lecture that looks at changing forms in folk dance and music in Sweden.
In conjunction, Vasen will perform a miniconcert at Bull Moose on Middle Street, downtown Portland, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. In addition, the Maine Historical Society will show the documentary film "Old Maine's Swedish Farms" about every 30 minutes from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday Feb. 11.
