100 years ago, 1912
Custer Post Hall, Lewiston, celebrated the birthdays of Washington and Lincoln Wednesday evening. The Custer Relief Corps gave a typical old-time supper consisting of baked beans, brown bread, vegetable hash, and molasses doughnuts.
Washington honored the occasion by being present in the person of little Frank Cole, who was dressed in the regular Continental costume. As a little fellow who is only five years old, he carried himself like a general, and he fairly brought down the house.
The ladies were dressed in old-fashioned costumes and certainly looked like dames of “Ye Olden Times.”

50 years ago, 1962
Plans for the reconstruction of Lewiston Raceway are being prepared by the Lewiston engineering firm of Aliberti, Larochelle and Hodson, and will soon be made available to the City of Lewiston for review. Arthur B. McGee of Auburn, vice president of Lewiston-Gorham Raceways, Inc., said he hoped everything would be in order so that actual construction could commence immediately after closing of the track’s spring meet in June.
 
25 years ago, 1987
Gordon Samson  made his last run through Danville Junction on Thursday to end a 37-year career with Canadian National Railroad, 26 of them as an engineer. Samson was the engineer of the bicentennial passenger train out of South Paris in 1976. He recalled the fancy paint job on the engine and the people at the station dressed in old-fashion costumes. At the South Paris station on Thursday, Samson stopped the huge 3,000 horsepower engines to receive congratulations and best wishes from operator Guy Pomerleau of Norway and other railroad crew members there.
