Actors with the comedy troupe The Captial Steps perform a spoof of a debate between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
LEWISTON — The Capitol Steps will bring its humorous, satirical take on the presidential campaign, today's scandals and anything political to Lewiston Middle School on Friday, Nov. 9.
Performing since 1981, the comedy troupe has released about 30 albums consisting primarily of song parodies, including their latest, "Take the Money and Run — for President."
Capitol Steps has been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, and its "Politics Takes a Holiday" radio specials are aired nationwide on National Public Radio stations. (You can watch clips from live Capitol Steps performances at www.youtube.com/user/capitolsteps?feature=results_main.)
The Capitol Steps' material is typically presented as parodies of popular songs from past decades, often introduced with a short skit. Songs are interspersed with other routines like "Lirty Dies," which explores recent scandals while making numerous innuendos.
With its material constantly updated, the troupe has released several albums under the Obama administration besides "Take the Money and Run — for President." They are "Obama Mia," "Liberal Shop of Horrors" and "Desperate Housemembers."
Capitol Steps was created by three Republican congressional staffers who wrote and sang parodies about current events in their spare time. Joined by fellow Republican Senate staffers, they decided to put on a Christmas show as their first performance. That was on Dec. 11, 1981, at a Christmas party for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The staffers performed that show several other times that month and, in 1982, House staffers and Democrats joined the troupe.
Today, the Capitol Steps is made up primarily of professional actors and singers who give public and private shows year-round across the country. Performing the Nov. 9 show will be Kevin Corbett, Jon Bell, Brian Ash, Nancy Dolliver and Bari Biern with pianist Marc Irwin.
The comedy show of political satire, presented by L/A Arts, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $27 adults/$15 students and seniors. Call 782-7228 or visit www.laarts.org. Lewiston Middle School Auditorium is at 75 Central Ave.
