FARMINGTON – Tom White of Jay has announced that he is a Republican candidate for Franklin County sheriff in the June primary.
A deputy sheriff for 25 years, White has worked for three Franklin County sheriffs and has an extensive knowledge of the operation of the department. White currently is a detective in the Criminal Investigations Division.
He said there are several reasons he has decided to run for sheriff. One is the ever-increasing violent crime(s) being committed in Maine and Franklin County. White believes the next sheriff needs to be involved not only in enforcement issues, but also in the social problems that contribute to most of the crimes.
White said a cooperative effort with educators, legislators, judicial and the rehabilitation community is needed. He said violent crimes have impacted all Maine citizens on some level and need to be dealt with quickly.
White is a member of the Board Directors of the New England Narcotic Enforcement Officers Association, a delegate to the National Narcotic Officers Coalition, which meets yearly in Washington DC to assist in setting National Drug Control Policies.
He was also a guest speaker at the Québec Police Command College in Three Rivers, Québec this past winter.
He recently was asked to address a Turkish Police delegation, by the College of Arts and Sciences, Criminal Justice and Sociology Department, Western New England University, Springfield, Mass., on American border issues.
In October he was invited to Coeur du Aileen, Idaho by the Rural Policing Institute, a congressionally mandated initiative, to discuss cross border issues with western American and Canadian law enforcement officials.
White is also a member of the Eastern Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET), a past president of the Wilton Lions Club and Franklin County Deputies Association and is a board member of the Franklin County Agriculture Society. He is responsible for writing and implementing numerous public safety grants that have benefited the citizens of Franklin County.
White said his extensive experience and knowledge in local, national and international criminal issues has established a foundation and the credentials necessary to be sheriff.
He lives in Bean Corner with his wife, Lisa, and has four sons and one granddaughter. White may be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or 645-3563.
