Dogs, mushers to race on Farmington fields this weekend

FARMINGTON — Sled dog races will be held Saturday and Sunday in the fields of Sandy River Farm on routes 2/27.

There will be about 50 mushers, maybe more, and the purse is $1,500, Joy Turner said.

The Farmington Sprint Sled Dog races, sponsored by the Down East Sled Dog Club and Farmington area businesses, are slated to begin at about 9 a.m. Feb. 4 and 5.

The first race will be a one- and two-dog skijor, followed at 10 a.m. with four-dog speed teams.

At 11 a.m. there will be a three-dog junior race and a lunch break at noon.

Races start again at 1 p.m. with a six-dog speed race followed at 2 p.m. by an eight-dog speed race, which is new.

On Saturday at 3 p.m., there will be a recreational skijor. There will be no recreational skijor Sunday.

Mark and Joy Turner, organizers of the event, have made sure the trails have been groomed. For more information contact the Turners at 645-2864.

The race schedule is also listed on the  club's website: www.desdc.org.
