JAY — A Pennsylvania man escaped injury early Wednesday after he fell asleep at the wheel of the tractor-trailer he was driving north on Route 4, police officer Michael Mejia said.
The rig driven by Kyle Kemp, 25, of Lehighton, Pa., crossed over the southbound lane and veered off the road and the entire truck went over an embankment and hit a tree, Mejia said. The site was just north of the Jay Transfer Station in North Jay.
The truck, which was empty, is registered to Western Express.
There was minor damage to the trailer and extensive damage to the front end of the 2011 Freightliner, Mejia said.
The accident was reported at 12:45 a.m.
Route 4 had to be shut down for a Collins Enterprise tow truck to get the rig back on the road.
Mejia was assisted at the scene by Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier and the Jay Fire Rescue Department.
