Border Patrol officer involved in Carrabassett Valley crash

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — No one was injured when a U.S. Border Patrol SUV rear-ended a pickup truck on Route 27 just before noon Thursday, Carrabassett Police Chief Scott Nichols.

Officer Jeffrey Rankin, 31, of Jackman didn't see the stopped 2005 Chevrolet pickup in front of him in time to avoid hitting it, Nichols said. The truck was driven by William Cushing, 48, of Bath.

Cushing was traveling north and stopped quickly when a vehicle in front of him suddenly turned at the Carriage Road intersection without signaling, Nichols said. Rankin didn't see him stop and the 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV registered to the federal agency hit Cushing's truck.

No one was injured and both vehicles were driven from the scene, Nichols said.
