FARMINGTON — American Legion Post No. 28 will host a wreath ceremony to honor veterans at noon on Saturday, Dec. 15, in Meeting House Park.
Seven ceremonial wreaths have been donated to the post by Worcester Wreath Co. for the annual Wreaths Across America Day, Charles Bennett, POW-MIA state chairman, said.
He said 750 wreaths will be placed in ceremonies across the nation at the same time, noon on Saturday.
The wreaths in Farmington will be placed at the World War I, World War II, Civil War and Vietnam monuments, at the Legion Post, and at the Riverside and Meeting House cemeteries.
The public is welcome to gather in Meeting House Park Saturday to help honor veterans during the holidays, Bennett said.
Following a short program, refreshments will be served at the American Legion Post No. 28 on the corner of Middle and High streets.
Seven ceremonial wreaths are placed to remember all soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines.
According to a release, more than 400,000 wreaths are expected to be placed nationwide as part of the Wreaths Across America mission to "Remember, Honor and Teach."
The Wreaths Across America story began more than 20 years ago when the Worcester Wreath Co. in Harrington initiated a tradition of donating and placing wreaths on the headstones of our nation's fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery, according to the release.
The wreath company continues as a major supporter of the program, donating more than 30,000 wreaths in 2011. Other wreaths making up the expected 400,000 are sponsored by individuals, groups and businesses.
Wreaths will be placed in all 50 states and at 24 national cemeteries on foreign soil.
